Education & Outreach

The educational mission of the IIN is to foster a lifelong interest in science, engineering, and technology in people of all ages. To achieve this, the IIN provides innovative programs that connect our world-renowned researchers with students of all ages as well as the community at large.

These programs include research experiences for undergraduate students, graduate student and postdoctoral fellowships, nanotechnology boot camps for clinicians, nanotechnology town halls, and more.

Our goal is to nurture the scientists and engineers of tomorrow, enrich the academic environment, and engage the public in the wonder of discovery.

IIN Postdoctoral Fellowships

Funding support for outstanding postdoctoral researchers with immense future potential who are interested in being part of world-class nanotechnology research at Northwestern.

Mark A. Ratner Postdoctoral Fellowship

Supports young scientists and engineers who have recently received a doctoral degree and who demonstrate outstanding talent and promise in the field of nanotechnology (theory).

Richard P. Van Duyne Postdoctoral Fellowship

Supports young scientists and engineers, who recently received a doctoral degree, and who have demonstrated outstanding talent and promise in the field of nanotechnology.

Ryan Graduate Fellowships

Fellowships that support a community of scholars dedicated to the exploration of fundamental nanoscale science and to advancing this knowledge into practical applications of benefit to society.

Sir Fraser Stoddart Postdoctoral Fellowship

Supports young scientists and engineers who have recently received a doctoral degree and demonstrate outstanding talent and promise in the field of nanotechnology (experiment).

Weinberg Family Postdoctoral Fellowships

Funding support for research and travel to scholarly meetings for postdoctoral scholars within Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences.

Undergraduate Opportunities

NU Nano Scientist Program

run by the International Institute for Nanotechnology and the Department of Chemistry, seeks to emphasize the connection between material taught in introductory freshman science courses and topics in modern laboratory research

Research Experiences for Undergraduates

Paid internships for science and engineering undergraduates from schools around the county to engage in full-time research with IIN students and faculty over the summer. Includes stipend, travel, and on-campus housing.

IIN Symposium

An exciting annual day-long showcase of presentations by world-renowned scientists and engineers, including Nobel laureates, from institutions around the world. Designed to engage students, researchers, and non-scientists alike.

Frontiers in Nanotechnology Seminar Series

Presentations by renowned researchers who are making an impact in nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology Town Hall Meetings

Opportunities for non-scientists to learn about the fundamentals of nanotechnology and its diverse applications from IIN faculty.

Additional Programs

All Scout Nano Day

This annual event has brought over 1,600 Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Venturing Crew members to the Northwestern campus to learn about nanotechnology.

Nano Boot Camp for Clinicians

Clinicians and medical students can learn about nanotechnology, recent advances in the field, and prospects for translating those advances to the clinic.
