International Institute for Nanotechnology Celebrates 20 Researchers Named to the 2025 Highly Cited Researchers List
November 13, 2025
The 2025 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list is out. Their work stands among the most cited in the world, reflecting the influence and reach of their science. Thirty-two Northwesternresearchers appear on the 2025 list, and twenty IIN-affiliated researchers have earned a spot. This recognition places Northwestern in a strong position globally.
This year’s IIN-affiliated honorees include William Dichtel, Vinayak Dravid, Antonio Facchetti, Omar Farha, Mark Hersam, Yonggang Huang, Joseph Hupp, Mercouri Kanatzidis, Neil Kelleher, Shana Kelley, Tobin Marks, Chad Mirkin, Amy Paller, Jonathan Rivnay, John Rogers, Ted Sargent, Randall Snurr, Sir Fraser Stoddart, Michael Wasielewski, and Chris Wolverton.
Several members of this group were recognized in more than one field, which is a rare and meaningful distinction and underscores the collaborative and interdisciplinary culture that drives research across the International Institute for Nanotechnology. Mercouri Kanatzidis appears in Chemistry, Materials Science, and Physics. John Rogers is recognized in both Biology and Biochemistry, and Materials Science. Ted Sargent appears in Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, and Physics. Others were honored in Cross-Field categories, which reflect broad, wide-ranging impact across disciplines. These include Vinayak Dravid, Antonio Facchetti, Shana Kelley, Chad Mirkin, Amy Paller, Jonathan Rivnay, Randall Snurr, and Chris Wolverton.
Clarivate builds the Highly Cited Researchers list by analyzing publication and citation data from the Web of Science and reviewing it through the Institute for Scientific Information. For 2025, analysts identified 6,868 individuals who collectively received 7,131 awards from more than 1,300 institutions across sixty countries and regions. Clarivate notes that Highly Cited Researchers represent roughly one in one thousand of the world’s scientists and social scientists, making this recognition one of the most selective and meaningful measures of research influence.
The strength of this year’s IIN cohort reflects the range of research that defines our community. Their work spans chemistry, materials science, engineering, medicine, sustainability, quantum science, molecular design, and many emerging areas at the frontiers of nanotechnology. It also speaks to the curiosity-driven, collaborative culture that continues to shape discovery at Northwestern.
We are proud to celebrate this group and the impact of their work. Their creativity and commitment strengthen the IIN community and help set the direction for research across Northwestern. Their influence reaches far beyond our campus and continues to shape the future of science.
