Nanodevices rely on surface molecular nanostructures; they are an important issue in surface science, as well as nanotechnology research. A surface molecular self-assembly will be spontaneously formed when a drop of solution containing special molecules is deposited on a solid substrate. This self-assembly is a bottom-up strategy in nanotechnology for surface patterning. However, to realize a desirable nanocircuit, a designed and controllable molecular assembly or pattern is necessary. The desired assembly is mainly dominated by and originated from intermolecular reaction and molecule/substrate interaction. In this presentation, the recent results of the Wan Research Group on the study of surface molecular patterning will be discussed, including: The methodology for forming a molecular assembly on solid surface, the surface molecular reaction involved in the assembly, the assembly structure revealed by in situ STM, and the property of the molecular assembly.
Dr. Li-Jun Wan is the President of the University of Science & Technology of China and is also a Professor at the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Director of the CAS Key Laboratory of Molecular Nanostructure and Nanotechnology, Director of the Beijing National Laboratory for Molecular Science, and Chairman of the Academic Committee at the Institute of Chemistry at CAS. He received his PhD from Tohoku University, Japan in 1996. His research focuses on the study of single molecules, molecular reaction, and molecular assembly on solid surface within chemical environment via scanning electrochemical microscopy. In addition, his research focuses on the application of nanomaterials in energy conversion/storage and environmental protection. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers, and serves on the Editorial Boards of Accounts of Chemical Research, Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Communications, and Advanced Materials, and is Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. He is the recipient of many awards, including: TWAS Chemistry Award; 2nd Class Award of National Natural Science of China; 1st Class Award of National Natural Science of Beijing; and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific & Technological Progress. He is an elected Member of CAS, Fellow of TWAS, Fellow of Royal Chemical Society, Vice-President of Chinese Chemical Society, and President of Chinese Society of Electrochemistry.
