Materials Transformations and Dynamic Phenomena at Solid-Liquid Interfaces

Abstract

An understanding of solid-liquid interfaces is significant for various applications including solution based synthesis, energy conversion and storage devices, and materials corrosion protection. The Zheng Group has been studying materials transformations and dynamic phenomena at solid-liquid interfaces by developing and applying liquid environmental electron microscopy. In this talk, Dr. Zheng will first show the revealing of nanocrystal growth in solution focusing on shape evolution during nanocrystal growth. Then, she will present in situ study electrochemical processes using electrochemical liquid cells electron microscopy. Dissolution-deposition at electrode-liquid electrolyte interfaces and phase transformations of the precipitates during charge cycles will be discussed. These studies provide insights on battery operation and degradation mechanisms.

Biography

Dr. Haimei Zheng is a staff scientist in the Materials Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Zheng earned her PhD with Professors Ramamoorthy Ramesh and Lourdes Salamanca-Riba at the University of Maryland, College Park. She then completed further PhD research with Professor Ramesh at UC Berkeley. Thereafter, she became a postdoc with Professor Paul Alivisatos in Chemistry at UC Berkeley and jointly at the National Center for Electron Microscopy of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Dr. Zheng currently researches physical and chemical processes of materials with a focus on materials transformations and dynamic phenomena at solid-liquid interfaces. Her primary approach is developing and applying in situ liquid environmental electron microscopy. Dr. Zheng has approximately 90 publications, which have been cited more than 15,000 times, and an H index of 44. She received a Department of Energy Office of Science Early Career Award in 2011 and LBNL Director’s Award for Exceptional Scientific Achievements in 2013. In 2018, she was promoted to a senior scientist at LBNL.
