Thomas received a B.S., in Material Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Currently, his research is focused on a new group of materials called “Transition Metal Halides,” that exhibit magnetic ordering at the two-dimensional limit. This research involves characterization of magnetic and electrical properties, as well as passivation schemes to eliminate environmental degradation and device design. This work is important for both fundamental understanding of magnetism in materials and new generations of two-dimensional device structures that incorporate magnetism, which were previously not realized.
