Oliver received his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Chemistry from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. His research focuses on trying to create new protein-based materials that do not currently exist in nature, which is a huge challenge, because methods to do this are limited. His approach is to use DNA, another important bio-molecule, to direct the organization of proteins into specific structures. DNA can be thought of as chemical information that can be used to instruct how each protein building block recognizes and associates with each other.
