The first day of the Northwestern University Nanotechnology Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. The summer REU is a full-time program that runs for 9-weeks and is augmented by field trips, seminars, technical writing workshops, training in effective oral communication, a Closing Symposium, and submission of final papers. Since its inception, the IIN has hosted over 350 undergraduate interns.
The Clinton administration raised nanoscale science and technology to the level of a federal initiative by including major funding as part of its 2000 budget submission to Congress, and spearheading the establishment of the National Nanotechnology Initiative.
